Take a journey off Kauai’s beaten path to the MomiLaniKai Labyrinth, a secluded stone pathway surrounded by dramatic island scenery.
Situated on the remote south shore of Kauai, the Labyrinth at MomiLaniKai offers a serene retreat for those seeking spiritual reflection and inner peace. Inspired by the ancient tradition of labyrinth walking, this beautiful, meditative path invites visitors to journey inward while surrounded by the natural splendor of the Garden Isle.
MomiLaniKai’s labyrinth is crafted from local stones, with a design that draws from both Hawaiian and universal sacred traditions. Officially, it is a seven-circuit classical-style labyrinth, an ancient design dating back more than 4,000 years. Not to be confused with a maze, a labyrinth follows a single, continuous route, winding through seven circuits before reaching the center. Set amid native flora, the labyrinth offers beautiful views of Kauai’s Haupu Mountains and southern coastline, creating a harmonious blend of nature and contemplation.
The labyrinth is a memorial honoring Sherita Pearl Vlach, who passed away in 2008. This labor of love was constructed by Sherita’s husband, Bob, and his son, Michael. The name MomiLaniKai comes from the Hawaiian words momi (pearl), lani (heavenly) and kai (ocean or sea), reflecting both Sherita’s name and the labyrinth’s coastal setting. The labyrinth was dedicated on April 28, 2014.
The easiest way to reach the labyrinth is to drive to Mahaulepu Beach and then hike east for approximately a quarter mile along the rocky coastline. The drive to Mahaulepu Beach follows Poipu Road past the Grand Hyatt Resort, where the pavement eventually gives way to a bumpy dirt road. The road crosses Grove Farm property, and the access gate is closed promptly at 6 p.m. (opens at 8 a.m). Visitors should keep these hours in mind to avoid being caught behind the locked gate. The labyrinth can also be reached on foot via the Mahaulepu Trail.
