The Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge Viewpoint offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Hanalei Valley on Kauai’s North Shore. Located just south of the entrance to Princeville Resort, the viewpoint provides visitors with an excellent vantage point to admire the valley’s lush landscapes, patchwork of taro fields and dramatic mountain backdrop. The spacious, dedicated viewing area offers a more immersive experience than the smaller overlook near the Princeville Shopping Center, which remains open to visitors.

From this elevated vantage point, visitors can trace the winding Hanalei River as it meanders through the refuge toward Hanalei Bay. Beyond the scenery, the valley is an important agricultural and ecological treasure. Its expansive taro fields produce a significant portion of Hawaii’s staple crop while providing critical habitat for native Hawaiian waterbirds, including several endangered species. The landscape offers a fascinating glimpse into the relationship between traditional Hawaiian agriculture and wildlife conservation.

Established in 1972 under the Endangered Species Conservation Act, the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 40 species of birds, including five threatened Hawaiian waterbird species. Visitors may also spot native seabirds and learn about the cultural significance of taro farming in Hawaii. The refuge is part of the larger Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which also includes nearby Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The viewpoint offers an accessible and informative experience, featuring a parking lot with spaces for 25 vehicles, vault toilets, and a large informational kiosk highlighting the refuge’s wildlife, history, and conservation efforts. Two separate walking paths lead to distinct viewpoints, each offering spectacular perspectives of the valley and surrounding mountains, including the iconic Namolokama and Hihimanu peaks. In the distance, Hanalei Town and the sparkling waters of Hanalei Bay complete an already magnificent scene.

The viewpoint is open Tuesday through Saturday, except federal holidays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff and volunteers are often available to answer questions and share insights into the refuge’s history, wildlife, and ongoing conservation efforts.

Whether you're an avid birdwatcher, a photographer in search of the perfect shot, or simply looking for a peaceful stop along Kauai’s North Shore, the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge Viewpoint is a must-visit destination that showcases some of the island’s most spectacular scenery.
