See the unique iliau plant and enjoy scenic views of Waimea Canyon on this easy nature loop trail.

Length: 0.3 miles

The Iliau Nature Loop Trail is a short 0.3-mile hike that offers an easy introduction to the natural beauty of Kauai’s Waimea Canyon region. The trail’s highlight is the rare iliau plant, a striking species found only on Kauai. With its tall stalk and unusual, Dr. Seuss-like appearance, the iliau is an unforgettable sight. This ancient member of the sunflower family is also closely related to the Hawaiian silversword.
In addition to showcasing the iliau plant, the trail features beautiful views of Waimea Canyon and the nearby Waialae Canyon tributary gorge. Because of its short length and gentle terrain, the trail makes an excellent “starter hike” for visitors exploring the canyon area.
Although the hike is brief, it’s still important to bring water and wear sunscreen, especially on hot, sunny days. Rain can make parts of the trail slippery, so use caution during wet conditions.
The Iliau Nature Loop Trail is the first hiking trail you’ll encounter when entering the Waimea Canyon area. Parking is available along Highway 550 between mile markers 8 and 9. The trailhead for the more challenging Kukui Trail, which descends to the floor of Waimea Canyon, is also located along the nature loop trail.
