Wailua Falls is known for its misty rainbows, twin cascades and appearance in the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island.

Wailua Falls, located on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, is a breathtaking and iconic natural wonder that exemplifies the island’s lush beauty and captivating landscapes. Situated near the town of Lihue, Wailua Falls is renowned for its impressive twin waterfalls, which cascade down a lush, verdant cliff face into a tranquil pool more than 80 feet below. The waterfall is especially striking after periods of heavy rainfall, when the falls are at their fullest and most impressive. This captivating display of nature’s power and elegance has made Wailua Falls a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Kauai’s natural splendor.

The falls also gained national recognition through the television series Fantasy Island, appearing in the opening credits of the popular show that originally aired from 1977 to 1984.

Wailua Falls is located at the end of Maalo Road (Highway 583), a short country drive from Lihue. The waterfall is easily reached by car, with the main viewing area located directly alongside the road. A stone wall provides a spectacular vantage point overlooking the falls and the lush valley below. From the overlook, visitors can also see the plunge pool at the base of the falls—and may occasionally be surprised to spot people far below. Reaching that area, however, requires entering a prohibited and potentially dangerous area.

Wailua Falls can also be seen from above on many Kauai helicopter tours, offering a spectacular aerial perspective of the falls and surrounding landscape.

Wailua Falls Trail

There is a steep, dangerous and prohibited trail from the viewing area down to the waterfall’s plunge pool. Despite the dangers and numerous warning signs, a number of visitors make the hike every day, often on a whim after seeing others at the bottom from the viewing area. A chain-link fence to the right of the viewing area has been erected to keep people out, but holes are sometimes cut in the fence, while others simply go around the end.

Ropes have been placed along the trail’s steep slope to assist hikers. Hikers use the ropes, roots, rocks and whatever else they can grasp to claw their way to the bottom and back up. However, one slip could result in a tumble down the precipitous incline, potentially causing serious injury or even death. The trail has been the site of numerous serious injuries and fatalities over the years, including the October 2022 death of 28-year-old Nicole Chavez of Chile. Trespassers caught in the prohibited area may also be subject to substantial fines.

The ropes belie an easier way down and up, an ancient trail used by Hawaiians on the waterfall side of the steep slope that can be navigated mostly standing up.

Overall, we do not recommend this dangerous and illegal hike.

Additionally, A chain-link fence has also been installed to the left of the viewing area to prevent access to the top of the waterfall. This area is likewise prohibited and particularly hazardous due to steep terrain, slippery surfaces and the powerful water flowing toward the edge of the falls.

Fees and Parking

Beginning February 22, 2026, Wailua Falls is included in the State of Hawaii's new visitor fee system for Wailua River State Park. Hawaii residents receive free entry and parking with a valid Hawaii State ID or driver's license, while non-residents pay a $5 per-person entrance fee (children 3 and under are free) and a $10 per-vehicle parking fee. Fees are paid by credit card, with cash not accepted. The fees are valid for a single day and are intended to improve parking management, reduce congestion and help support the maintenance and preservation of Wailua's natural and cultural sites.

Parking at Wailua Falls is limited, with only a small designated parking area at the end of Maalo Road immediately adjacent to the overlook. Spaces can fill quickly during busy periods, although many visitors stay only briefly to view and photograph the falls, so parking spaces tend to turn over fairly quickly. Visitors should park only in designated areas and avoid blocking the narrow roadway while waiting for a space.
