Swimming is generally not recommended along most of Mahaulepu Beach due to strong currents, rough surf, and a rocky ocean bottom. Visitors should always use caution and carefully evaluate ocean conditions before entering the water.
Mahaulepu Beach is also located near the Makauwahi Cave Reserve, one of Hawaii's most significant archaeological and paleontological sites. The cave has revealed ancient fossils, plant remains, and evidence of now-extinct species, offering a remarkable glimpse into Kauai's prehistoric past. Unfortunately, the cave was closed to the public in late 2024, and future public access remains uncertain.

Reaching Mahaulepu Beach is part of the adventure. Located just east of Poipu, the beach can be accessed by driving a rough dirt road or by hiking the scenic Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. Drivers should follow Poipu Road east toward CJM Country Stables before continuing on the unpaved road. The final stretch can become rough and muddy after periods of rain, so drive carefully. Those arriving on foot can begin the approximately 4-mile round-trip Mahaulepu Heritage Trail at Shipwreck Beach near the Grand Hyatt Kauai, enjoying spectacular coastal scenery along the way.
Note: The access road to Mahaulepu Beach crosses private property owned by Grove Farm. The entrance gate is generally open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., so visitors should plan accordingly to avoid being locked behind the gate. Because Grove Farm has recently ended the leases for both the Makauwahi Cave operation and Kauai ATV, there is a possibility that public access policies could change in the future. Checking for any access updates before your visit is recommended.
