If you're looking for one of Kauai's greenest hikes, the Moalepe Trail is hard to beat. This peaceful trail winds through a tropical mountain landscape overflowing with ferns, towering trees, and dense vegetation, offering hikers an immersive journey into the island's lush interior. Located inland from Wailua Homesteads, the Moalepe Trail is an easy out-and-back hike that eventually connects with the Kuilau Ridge Trail, another scenic route celebrated for its rainforest scenery. With its wide, well-defined path and gentle elevation gain, the trail is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a relaxing hike surrounded by nature.

Unlike many of Kauai's more popular trails, the Moalepe Trail remains relatively quiet. It's common to encounter only a handful of other hikers, while local residents often use the trail for daily walks. Mountain bikers, horseback riders, and hunters also occasionally travel through the area.

The trail begins at the junction of Waipouli Road and Olohena Road, where a yellow gate clearly marks the trailhead. Parking is available directly across the road, with space for approximately six vehicles.

The first mile follows a rough, rutted dirt road through mostly open terrain. While easy to follow, this section is much more enjoyable during dry weather, as the road can become muddy and slippery after rainfall.

After about a mile—roughly 30 minutes into the hike—the dirt road narrows into a gently climbing footpath beneath a canopy of tropical vegetation. Ferns blanket both sides of the trail, creating one of the island's most vibrant displays of greenery, while the surrounding forest provides welcome shade for the remainder of the climb.

About another half mile farther, the trail levels off as it reaches a higher elevation. On clear days, hikers are rewarded with beautiful views toward Mount Waialeale and Kauai's mountainous interior.

The Moalepe Trail officially ends at an old wooden bridge, where it meets the Kuilau Ridge Trail. Continuing beyond the bridge rewards hikers with even more lush rainforest scenery and additional panoramic views of Mount Waialeale. The two trails complement each other perfectly, making them an excellent combination for a longer hike through one of Kauai's most spectacular tropical landscapes.
