Pakala Beach, located along Hoanuanu Bay on Kauai's West Side near Waimea, is one of the island's most respected surfing destinations. Better known to local surfers as Infinities, the beach is famous for its exceptionally long, peeling waves that can produce some of the longest rides on Kauai under the right conditions. Despite its reputation within the surfing community, Pakala remains largely overlooked by most visitors, giving it a quiet, uncrowded atmosphere.
The best surf is found near the rocky point at the eastern end of the beach, where consistent swells wrap into the bay and create the long rides that have made Infinities legendary. Surf conditions can be found throughout the year, although late summer often delivers the ideal combination of light winds and favorable swells. Bodyboarding is also popular when conditions are right.
Pakala is very much a locals' surf spot. Visitors who paddle out should be respectful of surfing etiquette, give local surfers priority, and embrace the spirit of aloha. A courteous attitude goes a long way toward ensuring everyone enjoys their time in the water.
Away from the surf break, the western end of the beach is typically quiet and sparsely visited. The shoreline is ideal for those looking to enjoy a peaceful walk, relax in the sun, or simply take in the expansive ocean views. A rock pier near the eastern end provides an excellent vantage point for watching surfers carve across the seemingly endless waves.
The ocean here is often murky due to sediment carried by nearby rivers, and strong currents can make swimming hazardous. For this reason, Pakala Beach is best enjoyed from the shore unless you are an experienced surfer or bodyboarder.
To reach the beach, park carefully along the shoulder of Kaumualii Highway (HI-50) near mile marker 21, just east of Waimea. Because traffic travels at highway speeds, use caution when entering or exiting your vehicle. From the roadside parking area, a short five-minute trail leads through coastal vegetation to the beach.
