Deep within the lush countryside of Kauai's East Side, the Sacred Rudraksha Forest is one of the island's most unique spiritual and botanical destinations. Associated with the nearby Kauai Hindu Monastery, the forest is home to one of the largest groves of Rudraksha trees (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) outside of India. Revered in Hindu tradition, the seeds of these trees are used to create sacred prayer beads worn and used during meditation and spiritual practice.
The Sacred Rudraksha Forest occupies a portion of the monastery's 363-acre property and is located about five minutes from the main monastery grounds. Together, the monastery and forest form a peaceful retreat where visitors can experience the beauty of nature while learning about one of the world's oldest spiritual traditions.
The Kauai Hindu Monastery was established in 1970 by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, affectionately known as Gurudeva by his followers. During the 1980s, the monastery began planting Rudraksha trees with the vision of creating a sacred grove that would provide the prized seeds used in Hindu prayer malas, or prayer necklaces. Over the decades, the grove has flourished into a remarkable forest unlike any other in Hawaii.
The Rudraksha trees themselves are among the forest's greatest attractions. Native to parts of India, Nepal, and the Himalayan foothills, the trees produce striking blue fruits that contain the seeds used to make Rudraksha beads. These beads have been treasured for centuries and are believed by many practitioners to support meditation, spiritual growth, and inner peace.
Visitors are welcomed by a towering 13-foot bronze statue of Lord Hanuman, the beloved monkey deity revered for his devotion, strength, courage, and selfless service. The statue was handcrafted in India over a period of seven years by four artisans before being transported to Colorado, where a team of 29 master craftsmen completed the bronze casting process.
One of the most memorable features of the property is the bamboo corridor leading to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity known as the remover of obstacles and the patron of new beginnings. Lined with towering bamboo, the pathway creates a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere as visitors make their way toward the sacred shrine. Within the monastery's teachings, this passage symbolizes an entrance into the "First World," representing the physical realm and everyday consciousness.
