Two Water-Related Fatalities in Lihue Area Over the Weekend
August 3, 2026

Two separate water-related incidents in the Lihue area claimed the lives of two individuals over the weekend, according to Kauai police.

The first incident occurred Saturday afternoon near the Ninini Point Lighthouse, just north of Nawiliwili Harbor. At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, bystanders reported what appeared to be an unresponsive person floating in the water below the lighthouse.

Personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard recovered the individual and brought her to shore, where firefighters with the Kauai Fire Department immediately began lifesaving efforts. Despite their attempts, the woman could not be revived. She was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Police identified the victim as Millie Mallon, 35, of Lihue.

A second fatal incident occurred Sunday morning at Hanamaulu Beach Park. At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 2, emergency responders were dispatched after reports of an unresponsive surfer floating beside his surfboard about 25 yards offshore.

Witnesses brought the surfer to shore and began CPR before first responders arrived and continued advanced lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, the man was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the surfer only as a Lihue man.

Autopsies have been ordered in both cases to determine the official causes of death and identify any contributing factors. Police said there is currently no indication of foul play in either incident.

While the two deaths appear to be unrelated, they serve as a reminder that ocean conditions around Kauai can change rapidly and that even experienced water users should exercise caution. Beachgoers are encouraged to check surf and ocean conditions before entering the water, swim or surf with a companion whenever possible, and heed any posted warnings or advisories.

The investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
