A California visitor died Tuesday afternoon after being found unconscious on Kauai’s Kalalau Trail near the infamous cliffside section known as Crawler’s Ledge, triggering a major rescue response along the remote Na Pali Coast.
According to the Kauai Police Department, first responders were notified at approximately 4 p.m. on May 19, 2026, after reports of an unconscious hiker on the trail near the exposed ledge area. Fellow hikers at the scene immediately began CPR while emergency crews worked to reach the remote location.
Kauai Fire Department personnel aboard Air 1 ultimately arrived at the scene and extracted the victim by helicopter from the rugged mountainside trail. Medics continued lifesaving efforts during transport to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where the man was later pronounced dead.
Authorities identified the victim as a 37-year-old man from California. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, though police said foul play is not suspected.
The Kalalau Trail, which winds approximately 11 miles along Kauai’s dramatic Na Pali Coast, is internationally known for both its beauty and its dangers. The trail traverses steep valleys, eroded slopes and narrow cliffside passages that can become especially hazardous during wet weather.
Crawler’s Ledge, where the incident occurred, is among the trail’s most recognizable and intimidating sections. The narrow path cuts across a steep mountainside high above the ocean and often requires hikers to carefully navigate uneven footing and exposed terrain.
Emergency rescues along the Kalalau Trail are not uncommon, with Kauai first responders regularly assisting hikers suffering injuries, falls, exhaustion and other emergencies in the remote backcountry environment. Due to the isolated terrain and lack of vehicle access, helicopter evacuations are frequently required.
