The iconic Poipu oceanfront restaurant faces an extended closure following devastating damage from Hurricane Lowell, while a fundraising campaign seeks to help displaced employees.
The Beach House, one of Kauai’s most celebrated oceanfront restaurants, is not expected to reopen until later in 2027 following extensive damage sustained during Hurricane Lowell in September 2026. The popular Poipu restaurant, known for its spectacular sunset views and memorable dining experiences, faces a lengthy rebuilding process after the powerful storm devastated the property.
In a statement posted on its website, The Beach House confirmed that the scale of destruction will keep the restaurant closed well into next year.
“Beach House is currently closed due to the devastating damage sustained during Hurricane Lowell. We can't wait to get back to celebrating with you and are working plans to rebuild. Due to the scale of damage, we do not currently anticipate opening until later in 2027.”
The closure marks a significant loss for Kauai’s South Shore dining scene. Situated along the rocky shoreline at Lawai Beach, The Beach House has long been a favorite destination for visitors and residents alike, particularly for its open-air atmosphere, oceanfront setting and spectacular sunsets. The restaurant has also been a popular venue for weddings, anniversaries and other special celebrations.
Hurricane Lowell struck Kauai in September 2026, generating destructive surf that battered portions of the island’s coastline. The South Shore was particularly hard hit, with powerful waves damaging oceanfront properties, businesses and coastal infrastructure. The Beach House was among the most severely affected establishments.
Fundraiser Established to Help Displaced Employees
Beyond the physical destruction, the extended closure has created financial hardships for the restaurant’s employees, many of whom have lost their regular income.
To help those affected, The Beach House has established a GoFundMe campaign to provide direct financial assistance to eligible hourly employees during the rebuilding period.
“Hurricane Lowell has changed everything for our team,” the restaurant explained in its fundraising appeal. “The storm devastated our restaurant in Poipu, destroying our building and leaving our hourly employees without the work and income they depend on to support themselves and their families.”
The Beach House is encouraging guests and supporters to follow its Instagram account, @thebeachhousekauai, for updates on rebuilding efforts and its eventual grand reopening.
