The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks has announced that Polihale State Park has reopened after repairs were completed to the park’s access road.
State officials did not provide additional details regarding the specific repairs or the extent of the work performed on the road leading into the park.
The reopening restores public access to one of Kauai’s most remote state parks, located at the western end of the island beyond Kekaha. Access to Polihale is provided by a long dirt road that is often impacted by weather, erosion, sand buildup, and heavy vehicle use. Road conditions can vary significantly depending on recent rainfall and maintenance activity.
Polihale State Park is known for its long stretch of beach and large sand dunes. The park is a popular destination for sunset viewing, beachgoing, shoreline fishing, camping, and photography.
Visitors planning to travel to Polihale are advised to use caution when driving the access road. Conditions can remain rough even after repairs, and four-wheel-drive vehicles are generally recommended. Many rental car companies also prohibit driving on the road under their rental agreements.
Officials also remind visitors that ocean conditions at Polihale can be dangerous. Strong currents, powerful shore break, and the absence of lifeguards can create hazardous swimming conditions, especially during periods of elevated surf.
The reopening comes after a temporary closure that limited access to the park while repairs were underway.
