Princess Koa Canoe Kauai

Princess Koa Canoe Kauai

Inside the expansive atrium of Marriott's Kauai Beach Club at Kalapaki Beach, the Princess Koa Canoe stands as a striking tribute to Hawaiian heritage and masterful craftsmanship. Carved from a single koa log, this historic outrigger canoe offers visitors a tangible connection to the island’s royal past and the enduring traditions of Hawaiian culture.

Weighing an impressive 750 pounds, the canoe was crafted between 1876 and 1886 for Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, a beloved figure in Hawaii’s history and a member of its ruling class. Hewn from a massive koa tree felled in Kona, the canoe reflects the deep cultural importance of koa wood in traditional Hawaiian canoe building. Prized for its strength, durability, and rich beauty, koa was the material of choice for vessels that played a central role in transportation, fishing, and even warfare across the islands.

Over time, the Princess Koa Canoe passed through several hands, each chapter adding to its storied legacy. In 1956, it was acquired by the Kauai Canoe and Racing Association from the Outrigger Canoe Club of Honolulu. By then, the canoe had begun to show signs of age, prompting master canoe builder Tetsuo Sato to undertake a careful restoration that returned it to use as a training vessel.

The canoe’s resilience was tested in 1982 when Hurricane Iwa caused significant damage. It was later restored once again by master craftsman Wright Bowman Jr., preserving not only the vessel itself but the history and cultural legacy it represents.

Today, as sunlight filters through the atrium and glints off its smooth koa surface, the Princess Koa Canoe invites visitors to pause and reflect. More than a historic artifact, it is a symbol of continuity—linking past to present, craftsmanship to culture, and the spirit of exploration to the shores of Kauai. For those who take a moment to stand beside it, the canoe offers not just a glimpse into history, but a quiet reminder of the island’s enduring connection to the sea.
