A visitor from Oklahoma died Wednesday afternoon after being pulled from the waters off Moloaa Beach on Kauai’s North Shore, according to the Kauai Police Department.
First responders were dispatched to the beach at approximately 1:45 p.m. on May 13 following reports of a swimmer in distress. Bystanders brought the man to shore and began CPR before emergency personnel arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.
The victim, identified as a 30-year-old man from Oklahoma, was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death. Police said foul play is not suspected.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers that can exist in Kauai’s waters, even at beaches that may appear calm from shore. Ocean conditions around the island can change quickly due to currents, shorebreak, tides, surf, and underwater terrain.
Moloaa Beach, located between Kilauea and Anahola on Kauai’s North Shore, is known for its scenic setting and relatively secluded atmosphere. Like many beaches on Kauai, however, conditions can vary significantly depending on weather and ocean activity.

Safety officials recommend checking ocean conditions before swimming, observing the water for several minutes before entering, and avoiding swimming alone. Visitors are also encouraged to choose beaches with lifeguards whenever possible.
Ocean-related drownings and near-drownings remain a recurring concern across Hawaii, particularly among visitors unfamiliar with local waters. Strong currents and changing surf conditions can develop rapidly, even during periods that appear relatively calm.
