Waimea Driftwood Beach is the section of Waimea Beach fronting the historic Waimea Plantation Cottages. A sign on the cottage grounds overlooking the shoreline reads, "Historic Waimea Driftwood Beach." Just a short distance from here, Captain James Cook first set foot on the Hawaiian Islands in 1778.
Aptly named, driftwood can usually be found scattered along the shoreline. Most of it originates from the nearby Waimea River. During periods of heavy rain and flooding, branches, logs, and other natural debris are carried downstream from Kauai's interior before eventually washing ashore at Driftwood Beach.
Although all of Waimea Beach is sometimes described as a black sand beach, the sand along this stretch is actually a dark reddish-brown. Its distinctive color comes from iron-rich red dirt and silt that are carried down the Waimea River and deposited along the shoreline.
With its heavily silted water and exposure to the open ocean, Driftwood Beach is generally better suited for enjoying the shoreline than for swimming. Beachcombing, peaceful walks, and watching the sunset are among the most popular activities here. Sunsets are often spectacular, with unobstructed views across the Pacific.
