Visitors planning to hike the popular Kaumumene Trail, better known as Hideaways Trail, on Kauai's North Shore will need to make alternate plans for the next two months. The County of Kauai has announced that the trail will temporarily close beginning Monday, June 29, 2026, to allow crews to complete repair work.
The closure is expected to remain in effect for approximately eight weeks, with the trail tentatively scheduled to reopen in late August 2026, weather permitting.

Kaumumene Trail is one of Princeville's best-known beach access trails, descending a steep hillside to the secluded shoreline below near 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. Although relatively short, the trail is known for its challenging terrain, featuring numerous uneven steps, exposed tree roots, and often slippery conditions after rain. The repairs are intended to improve the trail and help ensure a safer experience for future visitors.
During construction, the trail will be completely closed to all public access. The county is asking everyone to respect posted closure signs and avoid entering the work area for the safety of both hikers and construction crews.
The closure affects one of the North Shore's most photographed beach access routes, particularly popular with visitors seeking snorkeling, swimming, and panoramic ocean views. Those hoping to visit Hideaway Beach below should plan to explore other accessible North Shore beaches until the project is complete.
Because construction schedules can change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions, visitors traveling to Kauai this summer should check for the latest updates before making plans to visit the area.
The County of Kauai expects the repairs to be completed by late August, allowing Kaumumene Trail to reopen in time for the late summer and fall visitor season, provided weather conditions cooperate.
